AVE MARIA, Fla.—The Fire couldn't overcome their mistakes in a 3-0 loss at Ave Maria in The Sun Conference Quarterfinal Friday night.
Ave Maria had eight blocks, forced 21 attack errors, five service errors, four receiving errors, and five ball handling errors.
Southeastern played some of its best volleyball early, hitting .250 as a team with just two errors in the first set. However, AMU racked up 17 kills and hit .350 to take the set 25-17.
In the second, the Fire trailed by four multiple times early but battled back to tie the set at 12 thanks to two
Morgan Swanger kills. After falling behind 19-5got within striking distance of taking the set, trailing 23-22 after an
Emily Boehlein kill. Coming out of a timeout, the Gyrenes got a kill and an ace to take the set 25-22 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Ave Maria took over in the third, holding the Fire to a -.059 attacking percentage with five blocks and came away with a 25-15 win.
Swanger and Boehlein led the attack with 10 kills each. Freshman
Ashtyn O'Shea had 24 assists, which was her second-best game of the season.
On defense,
Katie Chillura had a match-best 20 digs.
