LAKELAND, Fla.— After not playing a match since October 3
rd, the Southeastern University women's volleyball team returns to action with a busy week this week.
The Fire (1-6, 1-6 TSC) have five games scheduled this week, starting with a home match against the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Wednesday, October 21
st at 7:00 pm. The Fire then travel to Marietta, Georgia to compete in the Life University Running Eagles Classic from October 23-24. Southeastern is scheduled to face Middle Georgia State, Brewton Parker, Life University, and University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).
At this point in the season, the Fire are led by senior outside hitter
Emily Boehlein in aces (10), kills (66), and blocks (16). Transfer junior libero
Fabianne Besosa has made an impact in her first season for Southeastern, leading the team in digs with 113. Junior outside hitter has contributed in several areas as she is second on the team in kills (57), assists (42), and digs (65).
Ave Maria travels to Lakeland third place in the Sun Conference with an 8-3 overall record, going 5-3 against conference opponents. AMU is coming off a five-set loss to undefeated Keiser on October 14
th. The Gyrenes are led by junior Cabriella Bouterse and sophomore Madelyn Haut. Bouterse is fourth in the conference with 113 kills, while Haut ranks first in the conference with a 0.352 hitting percentage and blocks with 44. The Fire are 17-3 all-time when facing the Gyrenes.
Southeastern travels to Marietta, Georgia for two doubleheaders, beginning with Middle Georgia State on Friday at 1:00 pm. Middle Georgia opens their season on October 22
nd with a match against Coastal Georgia. The Knights finished last season with an overall record of 4-15. Returning for the Knights is senior Cara MacFarland. MacFarland led Middle Georgia last season with 173 assists, 147 kills, and 23 aces.
In the second game of the doubleheader beginning at 5:00 pm, the Fire have a matchup with Brewton Parker College (4-4). The Barons are coming off a match in which they were swept by host Life University. Brewton Parker is led by senior setter Maria Dennis who enters play this week leading her team with 117 assists and 18 aces.
The second day in Georgia features two more matches for Southeastern starting with Life University at 9:00 am. The Running Eagle's kicked off their season on October 9
th with a win over Carolina University and carry a 3-0 record into this week. Senior Mary Zimmerman has gotten off to a fast start for the Running Eagles, leading her team in kills (27) and blocks (13).
Southeastern ends their stay in Marietta with an 11:00 am match with the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) in what will be the Patriots season opener. The Patriots ended last season with a 17-13 overall record and were knocked out of the conference tournament in the quarterfinals. Senior Jennifer Stein returns to lead the Patriots, she ended last year as the team leader in both digs (374) and aces (49).
