LAKELAND, Fla.—Thirteen of the top 18 NAIA college wrestling teams will be among the 16 teams competing for the NAIA championship at the National Collegiate Wrestling Coaches' Association National Duals at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
Last year, the Fire placed fifth in their first appearance at the event, knocking off the eighth, ninth, 11
th, and 12
th-ranked teams, during a 4-1 showing.
Southeastern is just three dual meet wins away from breaking the program record for team victories in a season, and will still have another six duals after this weekend.
First up for the Fire will be a rematch with the University of Providence in the first round on Friday at 9 a.m. SEU defeated Providence 22-18 during the Cascade Duals on December 15
th. The highlight of the tournament for Southeastern was
Dylan Chatterton defeating previous No. 1 Casey Dobson at 157. Chatterton is ranked third in the latest 157-pound ranking and is 10-1 on the season, and is unbeaten in duals this year.
Another possible ranked match/rematch is at 149 where No. 12
Andreus Bond could face No. 3 Shonn Roberts, who was a 5-0 winner over Bond in December. Roberts is the highest ranked of six Argo wrestlers.
In its next match in the double-elimination bracket, SEU would face either Brewton-Parker or top-ranked Grand View, which has won its last 81 duals and nine-straight Mat Mayhem titles.
The Fire last faced Grand View during the Desert Duals in 2017, losing 32-9. SEU is 4-0 all-time against Brewton-Parker.
Southeastern would need to win two matches on Friday to advance to placement competitions on Saturday.
