Men's Basketball Heads to Ave Maria for Another Challenge

LAKELAND, Fla.—Coming off a 2-0 week in which they took down No. 22 Keiser 83-74 to move into first place in the Sun Conference, the Southeastern University men's basketball team faces another challenge this week when they travel to Ave Maria, Fla. to take on No. 11 Ave Maria on Saturday January 18th at 4:00 pm.
In their first game of the week against Johnson & Wales, the Fire were dominant from start to finish and won 86-58 on the road. Freshman forward Riley Minix continued his impressive stretch in the win, tallying his third consecutive game of at least 24 points. Minix ended the game with 25 points and added nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The freshman was supported by his teammates as well, as Dylan Patrick, Jeremy Oppenheimer, Reggie Mesidor, and Isaiah Moody all put up double-digit point totals. This team-oriented play would carry over into Southeastern's next matchup.
Against No. 22 Keiser, the Fire once again had five players reach at least ten points. Jeremy Oppenheimer led the way with 22 points, Minix chipped in ten points of his own, and Blake Morrow, Isaiah Moody, and Devon Ford came off the bench to combine for 37 points. Southeastern's defense forced the Seahawks into 24 turnovers and took advantage, scoring 27 points off of their turnovers.
Next for the Fire is an Ave Maria squad that has struggled as of late. After losing four-straight the Gyrenes got back in the win column with a 67-48 victory over Johnson & Wales. Senior Leo Behrend led the team with 21 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Behrend currently ranks eighth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (7.9) and 17th in points per game (21.1). Freshman guard Marcus Montalvo has been effective on defense and from the free-throw line this year. He's ranked third in Division II in free-throw percentage (96.1%) and is eighth in Division II with 39 total steals.
Southeastern has the edge over Ave Maria as of late, going 10-5 in their last 15 contests. The most recent match-up saw the Fire lose 83-81 in the Sun Conference Tournament. Oppenheimer and Moody contributed off the bench, scoring 18 and 13 points respectively. Moody added five assists and four steals while Oppenheimer grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots.
