Fire Drop Hard Fought Match Against Bobcats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - In a close Sun Conference game versus St. Thomas, Southeastern women's volleyball team fell to the Bobcats in the fifth set. With the loss, the Fire move to 7-3 overall in the season and 1-1 in TSC play.

Senior, Taylor Greogry would lead the Fire with 14 kills and six total blocks. Behind Gregory is freshman, Baylee Warneke and junior, Emily Boehlein each with a total of 13 kills.

Sarah Castillo and Courtney Krause would usher a combined total of 49 assists for Southeastern. Castillo with 26 and Krause with 23. 

The Bobcats would be the first team on the board, and then quickly take a 4-1 lead against the Fire. Southeastern would answer back with a five-point streak and would take their first lead in the game 6-4. With the game being head-to-head pretty much the whole beginning of the set, SEU would get a four point streak and earn the biggest lead of the set thus far, 16-12.

STU would come back to tie the game even. With the Bobcats having momentum, they would go up in points to 20-19 against the Fire. For the remainder of the first set, Southeastern and St. Thomas would go back-to-back for earned points. Both teams totaled a number of 23 points and would feature a total of 13 ties. However, the Fire would find themselves on top, taking the first set 31-29.

The second frame, which featured nine ties, would go head-to-head again until the game was tied 15 all. The Bobcats would then accelerate and go on a seven-point, which would be the largest lead of the game 21-15. Unfortunately, Southeastern was unable to make back some points would lose the second set 25-20.

Going into the third set, it was tied a game each. This third set looked very similar to the first set of the game played between the Fire and the Bobcats. The two teams were back-and-forth, until the set was tied 7-7 and SEU would go on a seven-point run, having a 13-7 advantage over their opponent. STU would come back to the game 24 all, going on a six-point streak. There would be multiple ties and lead changes for the rest of the set. Southeastern would take the third set 31-29.

In the fourth frame, both teams would be toe-to-toe, with either team only having a one to two point advantage over their rival. The game would come to a tie, 23-23. With two points needed to win the set, STU would successfully obtain the remaining points to win 25-23.

With five sets being played, all sets were close. Southeastern up 9-7, the Bobcats would go on a five-point dash to take 12-10 advantage over the Fire. SEU would work their way back to tie the game 14 all. However, St. Thomas would be the team to close out the two points needed to win the game. Out of all five sets, there were 49 ties seen in the match. 

Southeastern will return home to compete against Ave Maria on September 18th. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Furnace.
