SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- In a gritty effort, the No. 3 Southeastern University women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2019 season. A second-half score by junior forward
Aisha Solorzano helped earn the Fire the 1-0 victory over the Evangel University Crusaders.
"I am proud of the girls because they overcame. I thought we were very good in the second half," shared head coach
Randy Belli. "We scored a very good goal. I think we should have had a couple more goals, but to come on the road and play with one day rest after a double overtime game, you have to be happy with that."
The Fire created chances from the onset of the contest, opening up the first 15 minutes of action with four unanswered shots.
Southeastern continued to create more chances than Evangel. However, the Fire failed to finish their efforts, outshooting the Crusaders 11-2 in a scoreless first half.
After outshooting EU 5-1 top open the second half, SEU finally broke through in the 68
th minute. Solorzano received a beautifully played ball in the box from senior forward
Uchenna Kanu, which she rocketed into the back of the net. The score was Solorzano's first of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Holly Eddins was a perfect 5-5 on saves in the shutout.
On the match, the fire outshot the Crusaders 23(6 SOG)-5(4 SOG) and earned eight corner kicks to Evangel's two.
Up next, Southeastern returns to Lakeland for consecutive matches. The Fire will host No. 16 Northwestern Ohio in their home opener at the SEU Soccer Complex on Monday September 2 at 7:30 p.m.
