LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire were defeated in both games of the doubleheader this afternoon versus Sun Conference rival, Warner University. Southeastern lost the first game to the Royals 5-3, and then Warner solidified the sweep winning 4-2 in the second game.
GAME ONE:
It didn't take long for Southeastern to get on the board, as Bailee Moll, who was first up to the plate for SEU, hit a solo home run to take the lead. The Fire furthered their lead by one as Haleigh Harrell hit a RBI sacrifice fly to center field to bring home senior Heather Faulk. Southeastern finished the bottom of the first with a 2-0 lead.
At the top of the third, senior pitcher Hannah Bodenhorn worked out of a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs, to keep the Royals scoreless. Then again, Bodenhorn worked out a two on, two out jam in the top of the fifth.
Both teams remained quiet midway through the game, until the bottom of the fifth. Faulk hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which brought home the pinch runner Jaz Szierer which furthered the Fire lead to 3-0.
In the top of the sixth, with two Royals on base, Warner hit a home run to tie the game 3-3. The Fire were unable respond in the bottom of the frame.
With the game tied at the top of the seventh, with the bases loaded for Warner, Southeastern conceded two errors which Royals opponents made count to finish the game off with a 5-3 victory.
GAME TWO:
Warner got on the board early in the game, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Southeastern responded at the bottom of the frame, tied the game 1-1 on an error which allowed Moll to score from second. Both team remained scoreless until the top of the fourth.
With bases loaded for Warner, an RBI single up the middle of the field would bring home a Royals opponent to advance their lead by one. The Royals still with bases loaded, hit an RBI single to left field and would take a 3-1 advantage over the Fire.
In the bottom of the fifth, Southeastern tried to make up some ground.
Sam Holcomb hit an RBI single up the middle of the field to bring in Moll to cut the deficit 3-2.
Warner would solidify their win with a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring in Warner rival and earn a 4-2 win over SEU.
The Fire are back in action on April 10th, as they go on the road to play a doubleheader versus No. 18 USC Beaufort. Game times are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
