AVE MARIA, Fla. – The Fire women's softball team swept the Gyrenes by scores of 3-0 and 7-5 in their last doubleheader of the season. Southeastern finished the 2019 season with a 25-28 (9-15 TSC) record.
GAME ONE:
The Fire struck first in the top of the fourth.
Heather Faulk doubled to left field, and was followed a single to left field by
Lauren Watters.
Whittney Purdy hit an RBI single to bring Faulk to home plate.
At the top of the fifth inning,
Ramsey Sullivan would reach on base due to being hit by pitch.
Hannah Bonner hit a single to second base, which advanced pinch runner
Jaz Szierer to second. Faulk would reach on a defensive error, and load the bases. A second Gyrene put
Sam Holcomb on base and bring Szierer to home plate. Southeastern lead 2-0 going into the sixth frame.
Southeastern had bases loaded at the top of the seventh, when Holcomb would hit an RBI single to center field to bring Bonner to home plate and solidify a 3-0 victory over the Gyrenes. Senior,
Hannah Bodenhorn finished the day with 11 strikeouts, finishing her senior season with a total of 164.
GAME TWO:
Ave Maria would strike first at the start of the game, leading off with a single and then stealing second. The Gyrenes would then reach on base on an error, then steal another base. With two players in scoring position, AMU hit a sacrifice fly to bring in one run and take a 1-0 advantage over the Fire.
In the top half of the third, Southeastern got on the board to tie the game 1-1. Bonner and Holcomb would get on bases with two singles to right field. With players on the corners, an RBI single to left field by
Haleigh Harrell would bring Bonner home.
The Gyrenes responded in the top of the fourth, to take the lead again 2-1. Ave Maria led off with a single up the middle and then, a sacrifice bunt would help advance AMU player to second base. AMU would hit an RBI single to bring in the runner on second.
Bailee Moll would lead off with a single to right field in the top of the fifth. An RBI triple to left field by Harrell would bring home Moll and knot the game at two. Benson-Ross hit an RBI single to help the Fire take a 3-2 lead over the Gyrenes, the first lead change of the game.
With bases loaded in the top half of the sixth, Holcomb would hit an three-run triple to bring home Szierer, Bonner, and Faulk. Going into the last inning, Southeastern lead 6-2 over Ave Maria.
Freshman,
Kaylee Orr would lead off with a single to left field in the top of the seventh. Szierer singled to shortstop and advanced Orr to second. An RBI single by Bonner would bring home Orr and give the Fire a 7-2 advantage.
The Gyrenes weren't done yet. In the last inning of the game, there were two players on bases, and AMU tripled to left field to cut the deficit by two. The last point for the Gyrenes was a RBI single up center field. The competition finished 7-5 for the Fire.
