LAKELAND, Fla.—After coming off their first Sun Conference sweep of the season, the Fire softball team will look to defeat Thomas University, who comes to town for a league doubleheader on Saturday.
SERIES INFO:
Southeastern (20-17, 4-4 TSC) vs Thomas University (11-15, 5-5 TSC)
Date: Saturday March 30, 2019
Times: Game 1- 12:00 p.m., Game 2- 2:00 p.m.
Location: Lakeland, Fla.
The Fire:
- Southeastern has rattled off three consecutive victories, including a 9-1 win over NCAA Division II University of Minnesota Crookston.
- The difference between wins and losses has been a matter of run production for the Fire. In wins this season, SEU is notching 7.6 runs per game, while putting up a mere 1.7 runs in defeats. The team is 12-1 when scoring at least five runs.
- Junior transfer Bailee Moll has recorded multiple hits in five of the last six contests. The Crest Hill, Ill. native captains the team with a .350 batting average and 43 hits on the season, while ranking first in the nation with 16 doubles.
- Pitching has proven valuable for the Fire, as Ashley Appell and Hannah Bodenhorn are having fantastic seasons in the circle. The duo ranks fourth and fifth in the conference, allowing opposing batters to hit just .199 and .209, respectively. Appell, a sophomore, also ranks third in TSC in ERA (1.44).
The Night Hawks:
- Although Thomas has an 11-15 record, the record does not accurately depict the Night Hawks' play thus far. Eleven of the team's 15 losses have been to teams currently either ranked or receiving votes in the national poll.
- Emily Bowne, a sophomore left-handed pitcher, leads Thomas in the circle. Bowne, who has posted a 2-0 record this season, ranks fourth in the conference and 44th in the nation with a 1.46 ERA.
- Holly Campbell is Thomas' best hitter on the year with a .373 batting average and 28 hits. The junior has recorded hits in five of the last seven contests, including a 3-4 performance in an 11-3 victory against Keiser.
- The last time the Fire and the Night Hawks met, Thomas defeated Southeastern 2-0 in the 2018 Sun Conference Tournament. The squads split the two regular season meetings in Thomasville a season ago.
