Fire Battle Against NCAA DII Cavaliers, Fall in Exhibition

LAKELAND, Fla.- The RV Southeastern University men's basketball team had a solid showing in their exhibition contest against the NCAA Division II Walsh University Cavaliers. After SEU led 36-32 at the half, lights-out shooting by the Cavaliers in the second half allowed them to surpass the Fire 80-72.

The Fire held a Walsh team that was shooting 43.7% from three-point range heading into the contest to just 27.8% in the first half (5-18). Meanwhile, the Fire shot 46.7% from the field (14-30) and scored nine 12 points off of 11 turnovers by the Cavaliers in the first half.

Senior point guard Jeremy Oppenheimer scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half of play.

Freshman Riley Minix had a solid day for SEU after earning the starting nod, scoring 11 of his team-best 18 points in the second half, and hauling in a 12 rebounds to notch the double-double.

The Cavaliers used a 19-2 run versus the Fire midway through the second half to take a 70-55 lead with 7:15 to go in the second half. Walsh shot 42.9% (6-14) from behind the arc in the second half.

Oppenheimer finished with five assists to go along with his 17 points. Junior guard Isaiah Moody totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals off the bench.

Up next, the Fire will head to Mitchell, South Dakota to take on NAIA DII No. 1 Morningside and No. 7 Dakota Wesleyan in the Hoop City Classic on December 28 and 29. Those game times are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively.
