LAKELAND, Fla.- The 2019 SEU Invitational kicked off with an entertaining battle, as the RV Southeastern University men's basketball team fell to the No. 17 University of Saint Francis Cougars 83-72 in overtime.
The Cougars set the pace early on, as they went on a 12-0 run from the 11:09 mark to the 8:52 mark in the first half to take a 23-10 lead over the Fire.
Senior guard
Blake Morrow helped pull the Fire back in reach, rattling nine points off the bench in the first half to help trim the SEU deficit down to 34-29 as both teams headed into the locker room.
Saint Francis shot 50% from the field (12-24) in the first half while Southeastern shot 37% (10-27).
The Fire opened up the second half with extreme discipline, only committing two turnovers in the entire second 20 minutes of action. SEU outscored the Cougars 12-6 to open the half, as a Morrow three pointer with 15:36 to go gave the Fire their first lead of the day over USF 41-40.
Morrow was a force for Southeastern in the second half, bucketing 17 of his game-leading 27 points during that 20-minute stretch and going a remarkable 12-12 at the free-throw line. The Sarasota native finished the night 17-18 from the charity stripe, the most free throws by a Fire player since Ryan Atkins made 19 on December 16, 2017 versus Goshen.
The final 10 minutes of play featured a total of seven lead changes between the Fire and the Cougars. A USF layup by Austin Compton tied things up 69-69 with 1:27 to go and proved to be the basket that sent the contest into overtime.
The Fire struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the extra session, shooting just 14.3% (1-7) from the field.
Junior guard
Isaiah Moody was the only other SEU player in double digits, scoring 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Junior forward
Karl Jeanty finished with nine points. Freshman forward
Riley Minix had seven points and six boards off the bench.
The Fire look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon, as they host the Toccoa Falls College Screaming Eagles. Tip-off in The Furnace is set for 2:00 p.m.
