Women's Basketball Soars Past The Warriors

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The No. 2 ranked Southeastern's women's basketball team defeated NAIA Division I RV William Jessup 97-44 Saturday night. The Fire advance to 2-2 overall on the season.

In the first five minutes of play, the game was tied 7-7 between the Fire and Warriors. However, Southeastern then went on a 10-point run to take a 17-7 advantage over William Jessup.

At the end of the first quarter, SEU lead 28-12 over WJU. The Fire were shooting 47% from the field, along with 40% from the three-point line. 

Taylah Simmons lead the Fire's offense in the first quarter, earning a total of 10 points and four rebounds.

In the second quarter, the Fire outshot the Warriors 16-10, helping SEU take a 22 point advantage. Sophomore Raegan Linster recorded a total of eight points, shooting 3-5 field goals, and 2-4 from the three-point range.

Going into halftime, Southeastern lead 44-22. Simmons recorded 13 points in the first half, with a total of seven rebounds. Also helping the Fire's attack was Angelina Hammond with a total of seven points and three rebounds.

After the break, Southeastern would continue their momentum as they went on a 10-point run, furthering their lead to 54-22. William Jessup broke the streak with a three-pointer, and then tried to make up some ground to decrease their deficit.

With 5:02 remaining in the third quarter, SEU held a 31-point lead over the Warriors. However, that wouldn't be the biggest lead seen in the period. At the end of the third, SEU held a 41-point advantage over WJU with a 76-34 lead.

Simmons ended the third with 21 points and shooting 3-3 in the field, while also sinking both her free-throws. She recorded her only steal of the game in the third as well.

Haley Howarth obtained six points in the first and third period, ending with a total of 12 points on the night in only 13 minutes of play.

Southeastern looked to close out the game in the last quarter. William Jessup would only tally a total of 10 points in the fourth quarter, while Southeastern would record 21 total points, ending the game with a 97-44 victory over WJU.

The Fire finished the night shooting 48% from the field and 50% from the three-point range. SEU also recorded a total of 48 rebounds. Leading the Fire in rebounds was Simmons with 11 and M'caela Sellers with nine.

Southeastern will be back in action on Monday night as they play against Simpson University in Redding, Calif. The game is set to start at 9 p.m. eastern time.
