THOMASVILLE, Ga. - The Southeastern men's basketball team earned their fourth consecutive win as they beat Thomas 73-59 this Saturday afternoon. The Fire now advance to 5-1 overall, and remain undefeated in TSC competition.
The majority of the first half of the game remained toe-to-toe between the Fire and the Night Hawks. It wasn't until the 16th minute, a lay-up by Reggie Mesidor would regain the lead for SEU.
With 3:10 remaining, the game came close again as the Fire led 25-21 and a successful shot beyond the arc by Thomas' Antionio Bellamy II cut the deficit to one again.Â
Shortly after, Southeastern responded with back-to-back three-pointers by junior guard Karl Jeanty and freshman point guard Mesidor to help the Fire extend their lead by seven.
For the remaining minutes of the half, Thomas obtained two points by two successful free throw attempts. The Fire finished the half with a short five-point run to go into the intermission with a 35-26 advantage.
In the first half, Thomas sunk all five free throw attempts. However, TU was shooting 11.1% from the three-point line. Southeastern ended the first half shooting 41% from the field, and from beyond the arc.
Senior center, Devon Ford opened up the start of the second half with a layup with the assist by Jeanty. The Fire would then go on a seven-point streak to pull away from Thomas by 16 points.
Throughout the second half, the Fire continued their dominance, always staying ahead of the Night Hawks. With 5:11 remaining, the Fire went on a short six-point run, thanks to Blake Morrow.
With four minutes remaining in the game, SEU averaged a 13-point lead against Thomas to earn their third conference victory of the season.
In the second half, Southeastern tallied a total of 17 free throws and only missed two attempts, therefore shooting 88.2% from the line.
Leading the Fire in points this afternoon was Jeanty with a total of 16. Jeanty also led the team with 11 rebounds, including four offensive and seven defensive. Altogether, the Fire tallied 47 total rebounds on the day.
Following, Jeanty was Morrow who earned 13 points. Morrow shot 3-3 from the free-throw line as well.
The Fire will be back in action on Tuesday November 26th, as they return home to play Our Lady of the Lake University. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
