WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Southeastern women's volleyball dropped their Sun Conference semifinal matchup with Coastal Georgia by a score of 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
Southeastern started the day with a service ace by senior Kirsten Sutherland, earning the first point of the game. After a kill by sophomore Adair Werley to tie the game, the Mariners went on a ten-point run, taking a 10-1 lead over SEU.
The first kill from the Fire came in the 16th rally by Emily Kalmink. With the score 13-5 for the Mariners, CCGA quickly increased their lead by four, forcing the Fire to take a timeout with the game being 17-5 for Coastal Georgia. Returning from the break, the Mariners closed out the first set 25-14.Â
At the start of the second set, CCGA lead 2-0, but then the Fire tied the game from kills by Emily Boehlein and Taylor Gregory. However, the Mariners advanced their lead to 10-4 as they outscored the Fire 8-2, compelling SEU to take a timeout.
Near the end of the middle frame, the Mariners led 24-16, only needing to obtain match point. A kill by Courtney Krause got SEU rolling, as they went on a four-point streak, decreasing the deficit and making CCGA take a timeout.
After the break, an attacking error by SEU would secure a 25-20 victory for the Mariners, and CCGA would lead by two games.
Coastal Georgia looked to close out the game in the third set, sweeping the Fire. The Mariners took a swift 13-4 lead over Southeastern. Then outscored SEU 12-8, winning the final game 25-12.Â
Boehlein lead the Fire's offense as she contributed seven kills and a hitting percentage of .333. Kalmink and Krause earned six kills each, while Gregory obtained five as well.
With the defeat, the Fire are eliminated from postseason, and they finish the year with a 21-10 record.
