MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The No. 4 ranked Southeastern University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory against St. Thomas after going into double overtime. The Fire are now 13-3 overall in the season, and 7-1 in-conference play.
The Bobcats started the game aggressively against the Fire, as they registered two shots and one goal within the first two minutes of play.
Katharina Jullich had an opportunity for STU before junior, Leonie Weide scored her third goal of the season for St. Thomas and put the Bobcats up 1-0 against the Fire.
Just a little over five minutes later, a through ball from Bania Duran would find the feet of Uchenna Kanu past the defenders and beating the goalie to tie the game 1-1. This marked Kanu's 28th goal of the season.
St. Thomas played critical defense for the remainder of the half, sending the game into intermission tied 1-1.
In the 59th minute of play, Aisha Solorozano would run down the left side of the field, beating a STU defenseman and chipping the ball across the box, looking for Duran at the back post. Unfortunately the ball hit the crossbar and end up in the hands of Bobcats' keeper, Melanie Lefebvre.
Shortly after, Kanu delivered a ball to Duran at the top of the box, and her shot was blocked by a STU defender and cleared out of the danger zone.
In the second half, Southeastern tallied six shots on goal, five of the six shots were saved by STU's goalkeeper Lefebvre. The match remained 1-1, meaning the two teams would head into overtime periods.
With three minutes left in the first overtime, the Fire was awarded a free kick approximately 30-yards from the goal. Aisha Solorzano took the kick for Southeastern and unfortunately the ball hit the crossbar.
STU only record one shot on goal in the first overtime.
With three minutes left to go in the second overtime, Gabriela Labrador took a corner kick for the Fire which was headed into the goal by Kanu, which marked her 29th goal of the season and secured a 2-1 victory for the Fire.
Southeastern will be back in action on October 25th as they play their last home game of the season against SCAD. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
