The Fire Wins In Three Against The Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. - The Southeastern women's volleyball team earned a sweep over Ave Maria Wednesday evening to advance to 17-6 overall on the season and 8-3 in conference play.

At the beginning of the first set, the Gyrenes were the first to get on the board and took an early four point lead. AMU continued to be dominant at the start until SEU would fight back to eventually tie the game 9-9.

Shortly after, SEU would find themselves with the lead and would continue their momentum through the first set to secure a 25-18 victory over Ave Maria. 

The start of the second set would see six tiebreakers, until the game was tied 9-all. It wouldn't take long for the Fire to build confidence and go on a run to soon lead 18-12 over the Gyrenes. Looking to close out the second set, Southeastern would continue their energy and obtain a 25-21 win over AMU.

Southeastern looking to close out the game and win the third set, would quickly find themselves leading 9-4 against the Gyrenes. AMU would fight to get back into the game, giving SEU only a two-point advantage. However, it wouldn't be enough to stop the Fire from going on another run and taking a 22-14 lead. 

With the game 24-16 for the Fire, Ave Maria would go on a five-point run but would not be enough to stop SEU from getting the set point and earning a three game victory over the Gyrenes.

Despite the three game loss, Ave Maria was the first team to get on the board in each set. AMU tallied a total of 46 kills compared to SEU's 40 kills in the game.

Affecting the Gyrenes the most was errors, as AMU conceded a total of 30 attacking errors, with an additional four service errors.

Outstanding for the Fire was their defensive play, as Southeastern recorded a total of 10.5 blocks in the game. Taylor Gregory lead the Fire with a total of eight blocks. Also, coming into the game for the Fire was sophomore Elise Moralobo who led the team in digs with 14.

Senior Emily Boehlein lead the Fire attack as she secured 14 kills in this evening's game and hit  .481.

Another leader for the Fire was Emily Kalmink who earned 10 kills on the night, along with a hitting percentage of .400. Kalmink is six kills away from earning her 1,000th career kill.

Southeastern will be back in action on October 25th as they play against Trinity Christian at 3:30 p.m. and Loyola at 6:30 p.m. #FeelTheHeat
