Volleyball Wins 5-Set Thriller On Road

Box Score

LAKE WALES, Fla.—The Southeastern University women's volleyball team got their third conference win as they went on the road and defeated the Warner Royals in five sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-27, 20-25, 15-13).

Trailing 9-13 in the first set, the Fire used an 8-0 run to take a 17-13 lead and wouldn't look back from there as they would go on to take the set 25-17. Southeastern took advantage of ten Warner errors in the first set, including four during the 8-0 run. Sophomore Maggie Seagram shut the door on the Royals tallying three kills in the final five points for the Fire in the first set.

The second set was back and forth throughout, being tied at 12, 13, 16, 17, 20, until the Fire went on a 5-1 run to win the set 25-21. Senior Taylor Gregory began to leave her mark on the match in this set, recording three of her 18 kills. Her third kill tied things up at 17. Gregory's 18 kills led the team, as did her .615 hitting percentage.

The Fire wanted to end things early in the fourth set. After trailing 12-20, Southeastern rallied to trail by just one, 20-21. Their comeback would fall short, and Warner forced a fifth set and jumped out to a 7-6 lead in the final set. The Fire wouldn't be denied, however, as a kill by Gregory would spark a Fire run to win the last set 15-13. Emily Boehlein chipped in with two kills and a block in the final stretch, as did Baylee Warneke who had two kills. Boehlein and Warneke finished the night with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Sarah Castillo led the Fire with 43 assists and tallied 10 digs. Southeastern covered the floor as Katie Chillura had the team lead with 19 digs, and Grace Ball had 15 digs. Seagram and Hannah Kaszubowski had 12.

The Fire are back at home on Saturday, October 5th when they host Keiser at 2 p.m.
