LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The No. 13 Fire wrestling team put together a 2-1 record against three teams ranked in the Top 12 of the NAIA Coaches' Poll during the first day of the NWCA National Team Duals at Freedom Hall.
The Fire started the day with a 24-18 comeback win over ninth-ranked Midland University, then dropped to the consolation bracket with a 38-10 loss to second-ranked Indiana Tech.
With a 22-19 thrilling win over No. 12 Southern Oregon, Southeastern can finish no worse than eighth in the tournament.
Against Midland,
Eddie Barrett got the Fire started with a pin, but then saw his team fall behind 12-6 after four matches. Returning All-American
Dylan Chatterton righted the ship with a win by pin at 157, then saw
Jason Davis win by technical fall at 184, then
Luis Peguero won an 8-0 major decision at 197 to put the Fire on top. An 8-2 decision by
Ben Cruz in the final match solidified the win.
SEU and Southern Oregon were tied at 10 after four matches, but the Fire went on to get decisions in the next four to take a 12-point lead with two matches left. The Raiders needed two pins to force a tiebreak scenario, but were only able to get one.
Individually, Chatterton finished the day 3-0 with
Jason Davis and
Ben Cruz going 2-1.
Action continues Saturday morning at 9 a.m. against No. 8 Lindsey Wilson with the winner advancing to the fifth-place match at noon against Campbellsville or Missouri Valley. The loser will wrestle for seventh place.
