MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—Facing a 16-point second quarter deficit on the road, the Southeastern University women's basketball team put together a dominant second half performance to win its 51
st consecutive game against a Sun Conference team.
Senior
Makenzie Cann had 15 of her team-high 24 points in the third quarter to help the Fire come away with a 99-89 win at Florida Memorial.
Outside shooting helped the Lions take a 54-42 lead into the halftime intermission, making 12 of their 24 attempts from long range. Additionally, Brianna Battle had 10 of her season-high 32 points in the first quarter.
The Fire started the second half on a 13-5 run with Cann scoring six points, and assisting on another basket to help cut the deficit to four.
Jaycee Coe hit back-to-back 3-pointers at the 4:03 mark and 3:33 mark to take the Fire from down five to up 65-64 for its first lead of the game.
"We made some adjustments defensively," said
Tim Hays of the second half. "We know we can typically defend the 3-point line in our zone but Florida Memorial shot the ball at a high level, and we took some smarter shots."
Tyesha Battle answered on the next possession with one of her four 3-pointers in the game to put the Lions back on top, but the Fire scored the next 10 points to lead 75-67 with 1:16 left in the third.
In the fourth quarter, the Lions tied the game at 87 with 2:46 remaining, but went 0-for-5 from the field and 2-of-4 at the free throw line the balance of the game.
Southeastern was 21-of-33 (63.4%) in the second half from the field, and was 11-of-17 from long range.
In addition to Cann, the Fire had four other players in double figures with
Elsa Paulsson-Glantz adding 19 and Jacee Coe chipping in 14. Off the bench,
Emma Karamovic scored 13 points, had five rebounds, and three assists and
Raegan Linster had 11 points.
The Fire are back at home on Thursday against Webber International.
