MARIETTA, Ga.—The Fire volleyball team is off to its best start in program history, recording two wins at the Life University Running Eagle Classic.
The Fire are now 6-0 with a pair of 3-0 victories over Brenau and Tennessee Wesleyan.
Southeastern came out strong against Brenau, posting 13 kills in the first set during a 25-13 win, then totaled 11 kills on 16 attacks with just one error in the second to cruise to a 25-10 win.
In the first, the Fire recorded eight straight points to pull away and take the first. SEU also scored eight straight in the second, half of which came on service aces by
Courtney Krause. She finished the match with five aces to go along with 27 assists, three kills, and three digs.
During the third set, the Fire had to battle back, falling into a 6-2 deficit, committing three attack errors in the first eight rallies. The hitting fell off a bit, posting a .033 attack percentage during the third set, with 12 kills and 11 errors on 30 swings.
The Fire changed their fortunes with five straight points, going from down 13-11 to up 16-13, getting a pair of blocks from
Hannah Kaszubowski and
Emily Kalmink.
Emily Boehlein led the offense with 10 kills, and added a block.
Keniah Rivera Santiago tallied eight digs to pace the back row.
The Fire continued their hot hitting in the second match of the day against Tennessee Wesleyan, racking up 52 kills and a .320 attacking percentage. SEU picked up its sixth win of the season in straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-20).
Down 3-2 in the first set, the Fire went on a 7-0 run, three points on Boehlein kills, and another on a block by the sophomore. She finished with 12 kills, and two blocks to help out the winning cause
Avery Bradshaw was the top threat, totaling a match-high 18 kills on 36 swings, and added seven digs. In the back row, Rivera Santiago had 17 digs and three aces, and Kaszubowski had 10 digs, and added seven kills.
The Fire will play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season on Tuesday against Johnson University at 7 p.m.
