LAKELAND, Fla— The Fire softball team will host Trinity Baptist College in a doubleheader on Saturday for their first homes games of the 2018 season.
SERIES INFO:
#16 Southeastern (1-1) vs. Trinity Baptist College (0-4)
Date: Saturday February 10, 2018
Times: Game 1- 11:00 a.m., Game 2- 1:00 p.m.
Opening Day History:
Southeastern is 5-5 all-time on opening day, outscoring its opponents 52-34 in the ten contests. The Fire have captured three of their last four opening day games, all shutouts in five innings of play, and have surrendered just two runs in home openers over the past two years. Last year, SEU shutdown Edward Waters by scores of 15-0 and 9-0 in the opening day doubleheader.
The Fire:
Southeastern comes into the doubleheader versus Trinity Baptist after splitting a pair of contests against Edward Waters in Jacksonville last week. The Fire were able to silence the Tigers in the first matchup by putting up five runs in the first half inning, going on to win 13-2 in five innings.
SEU started their season with ten unanswered runs through three innings largely thanks to
Kiah Ferrell and
Britney Schmidt, who each registered three RBIs. Ferrell captains the Fire offensively with a team-high four RBIs, while maintaining a .571 batting average on the year.
After an impressive performance last week, look for
Haleigh Harrell to have an impact on Saturday. The freshman leads the Fire in hits (five), total bases (nine), batting average (.625) and is tied for the most stolen bases (two) with Ferrell.
Hannah Bodenhorn led the way in the pitching circle by striking out seven of the 15 batters she faced in the 13-2 victory. The junior from Nashville, Tenn. only gave up three hits in the four and two-thirds innings she pitched on Saturday.
The Eagles:
The Trinity Baptist Eagles are in their inaugural season of softball, having played a mere four contests all-time. TBC, who has faced two Sun Conference teams already, came up short in each competition this season. The Eagles were defeated by Keiser 11-0 and 11-4 before falling to Ave Maria by scores of 18-3 and 9-1 on Monday.
On a roster that features seven freshmen and four sophomores, sophomore Kayla Bass is a main offensive threat for Trinity Baptist. Bass, who has reached based in five of her seven plate appearances on the year, went 2-2 with two runs scored in the second contest against Keiser.
