The Fire have flared to life after defeating the No. 22 Webber International Warriors on September 29, winning their first game of division play this season. Now, they are preparing to take on the Ave Maria Gyrenes.
Both teams have defeated ranked opponents this season, the Gyrenes having taken down No. 21 Faulkner University to win their first game in division play last Saturday.
Historically, the Fire have not lost to the Gyrenes since their inaugural season back in 2014, managing to beat them the last three seasons, twice by a 60-point shutout.
Running back Bryan Bell has dominated the run game for the Fire this season, averaging 79 yards per game for a total of 316, and three rushing touchdowns. On the receiving team, Antwain Adams has 329 total yards, an average of 65.8 yards per game, and has made it into the end zone four times.
Quarterbacks Ryder Litten and Elijah Oltean have thrown a combined total of 10 touchdown passes and average over 220 yards per game between the two of them.
On the defensive side of the ball, Lamont Trent has 17 solo tackles to his name, and 35 assisted tackles, for a grand total of 52. Blade Denmark holds the team record for tackles for loss, with four this season totalling 22.5 yards. The Fire defense is currently ranked fourth in the conference for pass defense per game.
The Fire are the fourth Top 25 team Ave Maria has faced in its first six games. AMU traveled to No. 5 Lindsey Wilson in Week 2, and also made the trip to Waleska, Ga. to take on 2017 NAIA runner-up Reinhardt.
In last week's win over Faulkner, the Gyrene defense held one of the NAIA's top scoirng offenses without a point in the second half.
For Ave Maria this season, Quino Mauricette has run for a net total of 320 yards and has scored twice. Quarterback Will Tate has thrown for 806 yards and five touchdown passes, and wide receiver Kevon O'Connor yas 101 yards this season.
Defensively, the Gyrenes' linebacker Dylan Bryan leads his team with 43 total tackles, 16 of them solo. Sterling Curran, John Preyer and Kobi Bowers are the next top tacklers of the Gyrenes, with 42, 39, and 37 tackles respectively.
