Homecoming is here!
This marks the fifth year of Southeastern University Football, and the Homecoming game versus Edward Waters College is sure to ignite a flurry of nostalgia and remembrance for the Fire Alumni. The Fire have had a bit of a rollercoaster of a season, having a current record of 4-3, experiencing the growing pains of a fresh team with few returners. They've also yet to win at home this season, but in the history of the program, however brief, the Fire have yet to lose a Homecoming game.
For the last four years, in every contest between the Fire and the Tigers, the Fire have won, traditionally by a healthy margin of at least 20 points. This year though, the Tigers have performed better on the road than at home, with a 3-1 record at away games.
Bryan Bell, despite his status as a freshman, has consistently put up positive rushing yards totaling 529 over the course of six games, averaging over 88 yards a game, and scoring five touchdowns. Senior receiver Antwain Adams is going into his final homecoming game with six touchdowns and 598 receiving yards, averaging close to 13 yards a reception.
Quarterback Ryder Litten has had a productive inaugural season, passing for 907 yards, and rushing for 218, averaging 166 yards per game. These numbers have aided greatly in the 12 touchdowns he has had a hand in in his seven games.
Defensively, linebacker Lamont Trent remains the dominant defensive player for the Fire, with 72 tackles this season, 29 of them unassisted. Lineman Blade Denmark holds the lead with sacks this season, with a total of five sacks totaling 35 yards.
On special teams, kicker David Larson has made a name for himself this season, performing in such a way that has earned him the Mid-South Sun Division Special Teams Player of the Week award three times. He currently ranks number four in the division in total field goals with 11.
The Tigers are currently coming off their own homecoming game, where they were defeated by Ave Maria University. Now, they seek to rob another team of their homecoming victory.
The Tiger's quarterback Derrick Jones has put up an impressive total of 1566 yards this season, with 1135 passing and 431 rushing over the course of eight games. In conference play, he has managed a total of 734 yards in four games.
Also on offense, running back Corey Hammett and wide receiver Kamaree Noble lead the team in yards gained. Hammett has run for 485 yards, averaging 69.3 a game, and Noble has garnered 263 passing yards, with an average of 37.6.
Freshman linebacker Elijah Spivey has 41 tackles, 20 of them unassisted. Defensive back Kennard Mahone is close behind Spivey. He has more unassisted tackles than Spivey, at 31, but his total comes out only to 36, putting him in second place.
Game time is at 7 p.m. at Victory Field.
