Men’s Basketball Rings In the New Year With A Pair of Conference Matchups

LAKELAND, Fla. - Southeastern hosts a pair of Sun Conference foes on the hardwood for the first time in the New Year.  The Fire closed out the 2017 semester with a program best 12 wins.  After a sensational 14-game start, the Fire begin the push to the postseason.

THE OPENING TIP
  • Southeastern enters 2018 led by head coach R-Jay Barsh who has 100 career wins underneath his belt.  
  • Ryan Atkins has been the recent catalyst, recording three consecutive 30 point performances. Tuesday, he was named The Sun Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.  
  • Throughout this impressive stretch, Atkins has shot 89% from the foul line.  Overall, the senior has converted 32% of his points this season from the charity stripe.  
  • Multiple factors contribute to the Fire's high-octane offense; rebounding and passing.  CJ Reese spearheads the distribution efforts for Southeastern.  Reese, the native of College Park, Georgia, ranks 23rd in NAIA Division II basketball in assists per game (5.071).  The guard has tallied an impressive 71 assists thus far.  
  • The tandem of Grant Bryant and Isaac Barsh pilot the rebounding efforts with 90 and 86 boards, respectively.  
  • Southeastern ranks 15th in all of NAIA DII basketball in scoring margin (13.5).
  • Thomas University is coming off of a 75-58 victory over NCAA Division II St. Leo.  
  • The Night Hawks have yet to string together consecutive wins since November 1, 2017.
  • Javoris Cooks leads the offensive attack for the Night Hawks averaging, 15.8 points per game. 
  • Cooks ranks 5th in NAIA DII basketball in 3-Pt FG made per game (3.538).  The native of Cordele, Georgia, has matched his career high six made three-pointers three different times this season.  
  • Half of Willie Holloway's rebounds this year have been offensive.  Holloway has recorded a team high 32 offensive boards.  
  • Coastal Georgia is currently riding a three game win streak capped off with a 76-74 victory over #13 Dalton State.  
  • In the win against Dalton State, Haylen Washington amassed 27 points and 12 rebounds.  This is the second time this season Washington has recorded a double-double against Dalton State.  
  • Washington ranks 28th in NAIA DII basketball in total scoring (306).  
  • Brandon Martin is shooting 41.8% from beyond the arc and is averaging 12.5 points per game. 
  • Martin is third on the team in rebounding totaling 82.  
  • The Mariners 4-1 in games following a loss.  The only other time the Mariners have won three straight contests this season, there next contest ended in a loss.
