Southeastern has played Top 10 teams before, but never as a Top 10 team itself.
That changes this afternoon when the Fire take on No. 6 Lindsey Wilson.
The Fire will be looking for their first win over a Top 10 team, and their second as a Top 10 squad.
SEU moved to 3-0 last Saturday with a 46-21 win over Bluefield College at home. The defense was a big part of that win, holding the Rams to 178 yards on 66 plays, recording six sacks, and forcing two fumbles. Between a fast start by the offense, and a defensive score, the Fire had a 27-0 first quarter lead.
As the game progressed on, the unexpected layoff due to Hurricane Irma crept into the picture.
"The first quarter was very important, and I was proud of our guys with the effort that we had," said coach
Keith Barefield. "From a coach's standpoint, I thought we looked rusty and like a team that hadn't played in two weeks."
The Fire will bring one of college football's top offenses to Kentucky to face the NAIA's top defense in Lindsey Wilson, which allows an average of just 12 points and 330 yards per game. Trent Mueller is the top tackler, averaging 13.3 tackles per contest.
For Southeastern, the run game has been the key, but the offensive line has allowed only one sack in 106 pass attempts. The Fire run game averages 6.5 yards per carry with
Jarrell Reynolds leading the wy with 434 yards and five touchdowns. In the passing game, SEU receivers are averaging 15.5 yards per grab.
The Blue Raiders cruised to wins over St. Andrews and Warner, and surged past Union thanks to a monster second half last weekend.
LWC is 9-18 all-time against ranked opponents, and have been ranked in 54 consecutive NAIA ratings, dating back to September 16, 2013.
Much like the Fire, the Lindsey offense has moved the ball up and down the field this year, ranking right behind SEU in the Mid-South Conference in scoring at 52.7 points per game. However, it's been the passing game instead of the run game that's been the key for the Blue Raiders with a 201.8 team passing efficiency rating and 308.7 yards per game through the air.
The SEU defense has held opposing QBs to a passer rating of 102.1, ranking seventh-best in the NAIA.
Southeastern will head into a bye week following this game; its final non-Sun Division contest.
