Box Score HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - After enduring a tough overtime loss in the season opener yesterday, the Southeastern University men's soccer team responded with a powerful 4-0 win over the St. Andrews University Knights. The win closed out the Fire's participation in the 2017 SCAD Invitational.
"This was a good first weekend for our team. We have so many new players so we learned a lot about each other's capabilities, as well as things we need to work on," shared Head Coach
Clay Roberts.
SEU did not wait long to make a statement. In the 8
th minute, sophomore defender
Joey Dotson connected a nice pass on a buildup play to junior forward
Tauan Salgado, who found the back of the net to put the Fire up 1-0.
Southeastern took the 1-0 advantage into the half.
The Fire came out of the break fueled, as Salgado executed on another scoring chance fed to him by junior midfielder
Jonathan Jimenez in the 52
nd minute. This was the first multi-goal effort for the Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native as a member of the Fire.
"Today, everyone did exactly what coach asks and works with us on over and over again…We were able to move the ball smartly and sharply throughout almost the whole match," commented Salgado.
The duo of Jimenez and junior forward
Jake Van Der Luit closed out the game with a pair of goals in the 86
th and 88
th minute to put the Fire up 4-0. Jimenez connected the passes on both scores that were finished by Van Der Luit.
The Cali, Colombia native became the first SEU player to record three assists in one game since Ashton Hicks on 8/31/13 versus Ave Maria.
"St. Andrews is a very tough team, but our veteran leadership helped to push the score line late in the game. This group will continue to grow as the season goes on," remarked Coach Roberts.
Southeastern remains on the road, as a date at Point University awaits. The Fire face off against the Skyhawks next Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
