CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 13 Southeastern University softball team dropped its first game of the 2017 Sun Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon to the RV Thomas University Night Hawks 4-2.
The matchup settled in to a pitcher's duel in the early goings, as both teams combined to hit just .133 at the plate through the first five innings. Senior southpaw
Lindsie Scholwinski only allowed one hit, walked one, and fanned four during that stretch.
The Night Hawks shattered the silence in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs off an RBI single by Kelsey Connolly with the bases loaded. Thomas padded its lead in the top of the seventh with two more runs on three hits to go up 4-0.
The Fire attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh, placing their first two batters aboard. A wild throw by the Thomas center fielder Taishadle Kirindongo allowed
Brianna Perez to cross the plate. A pinch hit RBI single later in the inning by
Alexandra Millett scored
Sam Holcomb and cut the deficit to 4-2.
SEU brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in
Natalie Hughes, but a fly out to left center ceased the comeback.
The Fire now face an elimination game versus the South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks. USCB fell to Ave Maria earlier this morning 3-2.
First pitch for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
