Fire Drop Series Opener to Bobcats

Southeastern Has Tough Outing at the Plate, Bobcats Thrive on Big Innings

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 3 Southeastern University baseball team dropped the first game of a weekend series to the No. 24 St. Thomas University Bobcats on Friday evening.

It was a tough outing at the plate for SEU, hitting a combined .219 at the plate (7-32).

The Fire struck first in the top of the third on a solo dinger from senior infielder Luis Diaz. The home run was his fifth of the season.

The Bobcats strung together back to back productive innings in the bottom of the third and fourth. STU brought three across in the third and four in the fourth off of seven hits to jump out to a 7-1 lead.

Redshirt sophomore infielder Derek Martin cut the deficit in the top of the sixth with a two run shot over the left field wall. In his last 10 games, he is batting .447 (17-38) with two homers, six runs batted in, and 13 runs scored.

The Bobcats padded their lead, scratching across a run in the bottom halves of the sixth and seventh frames.

The Fire went 1-9 at the plate in the final three innings.

Southeastern will have ample opportunity to bounce back during tomorrow's doubleheader versus St. Thomas. Game times are set for 12:00 and 3:00 p.m.
