GULF SHORES, Ala.—For the third time during the trip to Alabama, the Fire went 1-1 on the day, defeating No. 14 Martin Methodist 4-1, and losing to No. 20 Central Methodist 3-1 during the Gulf Coast Invitational.
Against Martin Methodist,
Stef Guercio was excellent in the pitching circle, overcoming an early unearned run. The freshman scattered five hits, walked one, and struck out 10, throwing a complete game.
A two-out homer by
Natalie Hughes in the top of the second tied the game at one, then the Fire plated three in the third to take the lead, and pick up the win.
Heather Faulk led off the third with a single, and came around to score on a single by
Laney Haynes. Haynes scored on an error by the Red Hawks, and Hughes drove in
Kiah Ferrell with a single to left.
Against Central Methodist, the Fire bats were held to five hits.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Haynes doubled in Ferrell for the first run of the game.
Central Methodist answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of doubles that netted all three runs.
Lindsie Scholwinski recorded six strikeouts, and coaxed seven groundouts on 95 pitches. She allowed three runs on four hits.
The Fire return home on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Chestnut Hill College.
