Timely Hitting Pushes Fire Past Warriors

LAKELAND, Fla. - Game one of the Sun Conference Series between Southeastern and the Webber International University Warriors surely did not disappoint.  Due to timely hitting late in the game, the Fire reigned victorious over the Warriors 6-3.

Southeastern jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first frame.  With one out, Heather Faulk bunted for a base hit to set the stage for Cheyenne Blaha.  The native of Auburndale, Florida, hit a missile over the centerfield wall for her third homer of the season, putting the Fire up 2-0 over the Warriors.  Southeastern added one more run in the bottom half of the first to advance the score 3-0.

As the game progressed, both teams remained quiet for a pair of innings until the top of the fourth when the Warriors eventually broke through.  Webber mounted a two-out rally, to include a two-run RBI single by Kaitlin Cockroft and a RBI single by Ka'deisha McCowen that knotted the game up 3-3.

Despite surrendering three runs in the fourth inning, the Fire answered back with three runs of their own in the fifth.  A one-out single by Kiah Ferrell and a walk by Brandee Pietrzak set up a first and second situation for freshman Laney Haynes.  The Mosley High School graduate came through with a single to deep, left centerfield that scored Ferrell from second base.  A few batters later Sam Holcomb singled into right field, allowing two more runs to score and extending the Fire's lead to 6-3, where it remained for the duration of the game.

Southeastern's Blaha, Ferrell, and Haynes all finished the contest with a pair of hits, and  Lindsie Scholwinski picked up her 11th win of the season inside the circle.

The Fire will be back for a twinbill against Webber International tomorrow, March 25th, starting at 11 a.m.
