Women's Basketball Looking to Finish Regular Season Strong and Continue Historic Season

LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 7 Southeastern women's basketball team is looking to continue what has been a historic season thus far. The Fire recently locked up The Sun Conference regular season title for the second consecutive year after a 61-38 hammering of St. Thomas University on the road on Saturday. SEU now seeks to become the first team in conference history to win the title and finish the regular season undefeated. Standing in the Southeastern's path is the Florida Memorial University Lions, whom the Fire will face off against in two of their final three games.

GAME: No. 7 Southeastern (21-0, 13-0 TSC) vs. Florida Memorial (9-13, 7-5 TSC) Wednesday 6 p.m.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Fire have showed themselves to be one of the most balanced teams in the country, which is reflected in the numbers they have put up this season. SEU is the only team in NAIA Division II to rank top 10 in scoring offense (80.9 points per game, 10th) and scoring defense (54.7 points allowed per game, 2nd). Selflessness as also been a key character trait of this year's squad. 65.4% of baskets scored by the Fire have been assisted and they are fourth in NAIA DII in helpers per game, averaging 19.8. The depth of SEU enables the team to spread the rock around to many capable hands. Southeastern is one of only two teams in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 to have six players averaging 8.5 points per game. Active hands has been a key to the Fire's defensive recipe for success. The fire are ninth in the country in steals per game with 12.81 and third in blocks per game, averaging five.

BLOCK PARTY: Graduate guard Cassidy Block has improved her play during the second half of the season to give the Fire an extra boost off the bench. Through her first 11 games, Block was averaging 5.6 points per game and 3.8 rebounds. However, during the last 10 games, she is averaging 7.5 points per contest as well as 5.4 boards hauled in. During that stretch, the Naperville, Ill. Native has earned season-highs in points scored (17), assists (6), and is coming off back to back 10 point games.

PREVIOUS FLORIDA MEMORIAL: The Fire defeated the Lions handedly in both regular season meetings last season, outscoring FMU 159-115. Christin Strawbridge posted a double-double in the first meeting, while Alyssa Ramos led all scorers in the second meeting with 16 points. SEU leads the all-time series versus FMU 9-6. However, the Fire have won seven straight in the series, having not lost to the Lions since 2/16/13.

THE LIONS: After a woeful 2-11 start to the season, Florida Memorial turned things around, rattling off seven straight victories including six consecutive conference wins. However, the Lions recently had their win streak snapped with back to back losses to St. Thomas and Thomas. FMU will have the advantage of playing on their home court, where they have not lost since December 30th. Florida Memorial is anchored on both sides of the ball by junior forward Abreona Cabell. The Jacksonville native is averaging 14.5 points per game, 8.1 rebounds per game, and has posted six double-doubles on the year.
