Softball Finishes Spring Break Softball Tourney 4-0

PLANT CITY, Fla.—The Fire softball team closed its four-game weekend set at the Spring Break Softball NAIA Weekend with an 8-2 win over Middle Georgia State and an 8-0 win over Cumberland University in five innings.

A pair of great outings from pitchers Lindsie Scholwinski and Stef Guercio helped the Fire move to 7-1 on the year.

Scholwinski cruised to the victory in the first game, striking out 13, and coaxing five groundouts, and at one point, retired 15 straight hitters until a two-out single in the sixth.

The Fire overcame two errors in the first inning which resulted in a 2-0 deficit to score eight straight runs.

Sydnie Malloy started the bottom of the third with a single to left, followed by a Heather Faulk bunt single. They came around to score on a Sam Holcomb single to left to tie the game.

They broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits. Alex Millett, Taylor Stoltz, Holcomb, Brandee Pietrzak, and Cat Maldonado all drove in a run each.

The Fire added an additional run in the sixth on an error.

Malloy finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Holcomb, Pietrzak, and Maldonado had two hits each.

Guercio struck out nine in five innings, allowing just one infield hit, a walk, and a hit batter to secure the win.

At the plate, Pietrzak was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and drove in a run with an RBI single in the second.

The Fire plated three in the first, with Maldonado squeezing in Hannah Smith, and a two-run single from Laney Haynes.

Three more runs came across in the third with Malloy singling in Sammy Jacobson, Reed Jahnke scoring on a wild pitch, and a double from Millett to bring in Malloy.

The Fire scored their eighth run in the fourth on a double by Kiah Ferrell.

Millett and Haynes were both 2-for-2 with a double.

The Fire are back in action on Saturday with a tripleheader against Calumet College of St. Joseph's.
