Box Score LAKE WALES, Fla.—In the Sun Conference Women's Basketball Game of the Week, Southeastern easily handled Warner by a score of 85-37.
The Fire started the first quarter on a 22-0 run, fueled by seven points by senior Ana Richter. Eight different Southeastern players scored in the opening period, as SEU jumped out to a 20-point advantage after ten minutes. The Fire held Warner to a mere four points on 2-15 shooting in the period.
Back-to-back three-pointers from transfer Jaycee Coe continued the momentum in the following quarter, as Southeastern went on a 25-6 streak in the second frame. Coe finished the day with 18 points.
Richter also continued her impressive performance with another ten points in the quarter, shooting 7-8 from the field in the first half. As a team, the Fire shot 61.3% (19-31) in the first 20 minutes and went into the locker room with a 49-10 lead over the Royals. Richter ended the competition with a game-high 23 points.
Southeastern's aggressive defense was key to securing the victory in their first road conference matchup of the season. The Fire forced 15 turnovers and capitalized by scoring 16 points off of the ensuing possessions. Stout defense locked down the Royals players, holding Warner to 13-52 (25%) shooting on the day.
The Fire also rebounded well, limiting the quality scoring chances for the Royals and shutting down any attempt at a Royals comeback. Southeastern grabbed 35 rebounds compared to Warner's 21 boards, as five SEU players picked up at least four rebounds in the victory.
This defensive effort, along with double-digit scoring contributions from five separate players, enabled the Fire to pull away and cap off the 48-point win by out-scoring the Royals 36-27 in the second half.
The women's basketball team will travel to Kingsport, Tennessee to compete in the NAIA Challenge next week. Their first game of the tournament is scheduled for November 25
th against West Virginia Tech. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
