LAKELAND, Fla.—The Fire volleyball team has hit its stride in Sun Conference play.
Winners of four of its last six, Southeastern finds itself in the top half of the conference leaderboard. The two losses are two the only two unbeaten teams in conference play in five sets.
Last week, the Fire took down Keiser and Ave Maria, both by the score of 3-0. The offense was paced by
Kelsey Morton, who dialed up 28 kills and hit with a .404 efficiency rate. The senior from Plant City committed just seven errors in 52 attacks, and was in on two blocks.
In six sets, The Fire recorded 123 total digs; an average of 20.5 per set. Keniah Rivera-Santiago has been a huge addition to the SEU back line, posting a conference-best 291 total digs in 59 sets, averaging 4.9 per.
Kiana Sawtelle (178) and
Kaity Reed (153) have also helped out the Fire defense in their first seasons.
Wednesday, the Fire will travel to Lake Wales to face Warner, in an attempt to sweep the season series against their Polk County rivals for the first time since 2008. Since the last meeting, the Royals are 1-2 with a 3-0 win over Florida Memorial and a 3-0 loss to Webber International, and a tough five-set loss at Coastal Georgia.
The Royals are averaging 9.2 kills per set with Alexandra Gonzalez leading the way at 98 on the year.
The Fire will host Florida Memorial on Saturday, and will look to improve to 23-2 all-time against the Lions. Florida Memorial sits at 3-7 on the season, and will face Ave Maria on the road before heading to Lakeland.
The offensive workload has been split between three players with 40+ kills each. Jessica Medina is the top attacker with 49, and Yulianna Charris is one behind Medina. Tailar Jackson has added 40 kills. Charris has 17 of the Lions' 40 aces on the year.
