LAKELAND, Fla.—A 47-point first half was more than enough for the Fire to pick up its fourth-straight Homecoming victory.
Four first half touchdown runs by
Jarrell Reynolds, combined with nearly 200 yards in the first quarter alone helped set the tone for a 56-7 win for Southeastern over Webber International.
"We felt like there were some things in the film that we felt we could take advantage of and that's what we did," said coach
Keith Barefield. "Our game plan on both sides of the ball was excellent, and our coaches did a great job getting our guys ready to go."
On the first possession of the game, the Fire went 51 yards on five plays with Reynolds scoring from five yards out. Southeastern made it 13-0 when quarterback
Jonathan Pearce hit
LaQuvionte Gonzalez for a 45-yard touchdown pass with 10:05 left in the first. Pearce then found
Jernard Porter with 4:14 to go in the quarter to make it 20-0.
Pearce was stellar, completing 16-of-20 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Gonzalez was the top receiver with seven grabs for 130 yards.
"When we looked at the Lindsey Wilson film, (Pearce) knew there were some things he needed to improve on, and we had too many turnovers," said Barefield. "That's what we haven't had since that game; we haven't had as many mental mistakes and haven't had as many penalties."
Reynolds second touchdown came on the heels of a Webber fumble, and was a six-yard run to put SEU up 27-0 at the end of the opening quarter.
The senior also scored from 12 yards out at the 11:49 mark of the second quarter.
The defense also picked up a score when
Mark Myers intercepted a pass and returned it 73 yards for a touchdown to give the Fire a 40-0 lead with 3:40 left in the second.
Reynolds finished a 5-play, 69-yard drive with a five yard run with 29 seconds left in the half. Reynolds rushed for 69 yards on 13 carries.
Caleb Winter connected on the first of his three field goals at the 11:07 mark of the third from 30 yards out. The senior also hit from 37 and 34 yards.
The Fire defense limited Webber to just 16 first downs and 185 total yards. The lone touchdown was an 8-yard pass on fourth-and-goal with 4:13 remaining in the third to complete at 14-play, 79-yard drive that ate up 6:54 of the second half.
Blade Denmark recorded a pair of sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss to help the Fire defense.
Phillip Smith was the top individual tackler with eight, adding two sacks and 2.5 for loss.
