Lakeland, Fla. - The Southeastern women's soccer team defeated the NCAA Division II Eckerd College Tritons 1-0 in front of a strong crowd at the SEU Soccer Field. With the win, the Fire earned its first 3-0 start since 2010 and have opened up the 2016 season with three straight shutouts.
Both defenses stood tall for the majority of the first half. The Tritons outshot the Fire six to two in the first 25 minutes of play.
However, it only took one quality look to put the Fire on the board in the 39
th minute. In a scramble around the box, freshman
Konya Plummer fed a short cross over the middle to senior forward
Alyssa Kaminski who netted her fifth goal of the year. This was Plummer's first game of her SEU career.
Kaminski's goal proved to be enough for SEU to secure the victory. The Tritons attempted nine shots in the second half, but the Fire defense did not break.
"Anytime you play a hard, gritty team like Eckerd, to get the win is an unbelievable accomplishment…They exposed us in a lot of areas and we're going to get better because of this game," shared Head Coach
Randy Belli.
Junior goalkeeper
Sydni Brookhouser showed lots of grit in what was her first big test in the net of the season. Brookhouser recorded seven saves, more than she recorded in the previous two games combined. In her first season at goalkeeper for the Fire, she is 3-0.
The Fire will hit the road next for the first time in 2016. The first game of the road trip is against Montreat College on Friday at 5 p.m.
