Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.—The Fire offense got back on track, totaling 686 yards in a 65-21 win over Virginia Lynchburg in the 2016 home opener.
The Fire got most of their production on the ground, running for 404 yards on 49 carries. Redshirt junior
Jarrell Reynolds led the way with 149 yards on 18 carries, and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put SEU up 51-21.
"I thought we did some things a lot better this week, but it was good to see our guys get going and make some things happen in the running game and the passing game," said coach
Keith Barefield. "The biggest thing we found tonight is that we still have some things to work on."
Jonathan Pearce was 12-of-19 passing for 245 yards with
Michael Wheary being the main target, totaling 202 yards on eight receptions. Pearce found the end zone on a three yard run with 14:07 left in the second to put Southeastern up 13-0.
The first two Fire drives resulted in field goals by
Caleb Winter, who connected on kicks of 25 and 41 yards. Winter also added a 44-yard field goal with 8:46 left in the second quarter to put the Fire up 23-7.
Chris Bryant spelled Reynolds, rushing for 133 yards on 12 carries, and also found the end zone on a 14 yard run with 4:22 left in the second quarter.
Mark Myers recorded a team-high eight tackles, and picked off two passes for the second week in a row. The Fire recorded four takeaways, but had four turnovers of their own.
Southeastern returns to action next Saturday, hosting Albany State at Victory Field.
