Scholwinski’s Pitching, Maldonado’s Hitting Give Fire First Two Conference Wins

HARDEEVILLE, S.C.—The games started a couple days later than they were supposed to, but the results were worth waiting for.

Southeastern's softball team started Sun Conference play with a pair of wins over USC Beaufort 14-2 and 4-3 in extra innings.

The Fire totaled 17 hits in the first game, led by a 3-for-5 effort by junior Cat Maldonado. She picked up the first of her six RBIs in the game on a single up the middle in the fourth to give the Fire a 1-0 lead. She added an RBI single during SEU's four-run fifth, and a grand slam in the five-run fifth.

Starting pitcher Lindsie Scholwinski earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in five innings.

In the second game, the Fire jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI groundout by Maldonado, and an error.

The Sand Sharks scraped across a run in the second and got a solo homer in the third to tie the game.

After Scholwinski allowed the homer, she gave up just one more hit the rest of the game.

In the top of the eighth, Maldonado's second homer of the day put the Fire up 4-2. The Sand Sharks scored one run on an error, but a strikeout by Scholwinski ended the game.

Scholwinski earned her 18th win of the season, throwing all eight innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with 13 strikeouts and no walks.

The Fire return to action Monday afternoon for another Sun Conference doubleheader against Thomas University.
