Softball Rallies Troops for Cross-County Rivalry

LAKELAND, Fla. – Ten down, four to go. Southeastern softball remains at the top of the Sun Conference after notching TSC wins seven through ten over Keiser and St. Thomas last week. Second ranked Webber is next in a Polk County road challenge.

GAMES: Southeastern (36-10, 10-0 TSC) @ Webber (23-13, 8-4 TSC) | Friday 1 & 3 p.m. | Webber Softball Field | Babson Park, Fla.

HAVE A WEEKEND: Sydnie Malloy's bat exploded over the weekend. She averaged an impressive .727 in four wins with a double in three. She had three RBI's and three stolen bases in the sweep of St. Thomas on Sunday, but her bat wasn't the only thing on fire. In four games she was perfect at shortstop, committing zero errors while notching four putouts and seven assists.

SHUTOUT: 16-0 was last week's cumulative score. The Fire notched four wins in two days without giving up a single run, and half of their TSC wins have been by shutout. To date, they've given up 114 runs in 46 games for an average 2.48 runs allowed per game, a figure good for second in the conference behind Webber who averages 2.03. From a pitching perspective, 10 of the Fire's 12 total shutouts belong to Lindsie Scholwinski who is 25-4 from the mound and leads the NAIA in wins.

THE STREAK: A game-one win over Webber tomorrow would mark the Fire's 20th consecutive regular season TSC victory. After falling to Embry-Riddle 3-1 in game two of a doubleheader on April 9th, 2015, the Fire have won 19 straight regular season TSC games.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Last season, the Fire's second TSC doubleheader was against the Warriors and Southeastern took both games at home to move to 4-0 in the league. Webber outhit the Fire 9-8 in game one and left seven runners on base but the Fire defense held strong, committing just a single error in the 7-1 win. Game two was knotted at four after six innings, and it wasn't until the ninth that Anna Martin sent a walk-off double in the gap for the 5-4 win.

THE WARRIORS: With an 8-4 TSC record, Webber currently sits in second behind undefeated Southeastern. In their last outing, they split with USCB winning 4-2 then falling 4-3 with the loss snapping a six-game win streak. On the bright side, the Warriors have yet to be swept by a TSC opponent with their other losses coming from Warner, Keiser, and St. Thomas. Brandi Hazen and Laura Borders are two standout starters in the Warriors lineup. Both have started all 46 games while Hazen leads the team with 31 RBI's and nine doubles. Borders is second in RBI's with 23 and leads in home runs with eight. Five of the Warrior starters are hitting .333 or above.
