Offense Pushes Fire past Warner in Doubleheader Sweep

LAKELAND, Fla.—The Southeastern bats stayed hot in a Sun Conference doubleheader sweep of Warner Friday night.

Southeastern totaled 31 hits over 16 innings to record a 16-11 win in the first game, and 13-3 win in seven innings in the second.

Today's games mark the sixth time in the last seven games the Fire have plated 10 or more runs.

With the first game tied at two in the bottom of the third, the Fire scored seven runs, highlighted by Josiel Colon's two-run double to left.

Warner refused to go quietly, chipping away at the 9-2 deficit with a run in the fourth and four in the fifth, thanks to a three-run homer to right by Broderick Rodocker to make it 9-7 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

The Fire answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with a grand slam by Mike D'Acunti which followed a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Derek Martin, giving the Fire a 14-7 after five.

The Royals got back within three, scoring twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh, but again the Fire answered with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh on a Luis Diaz RBI single and an RBI single by Aaron Sheaks.

Jordan Gard improved to 6-2 on the season, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

D'Acunti was 3-for-4 with five RBIs in Game 1. Marcus Guzman was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and stole three bases.

A two-out solo home run to right field for Chris Mattison in the bottom of the first got the Fire on the board early. The junior picked up his 13th home run of the season in the second inning, which was a three-run shot over the centerfield wall. This helped make up a 10-run inning, totaling nine hits in 15 batters.

Rodocker's second home run of the day made it 11-2 in favor of the hosts in the top of the fourth. Diaz answered with solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to make it 12-2.

Warner needed a run in the seventh to continue the game, which it got on a two out single to center field.

The Fire won the game in the bottom of the seventh, re-establishing a 10-run advantage on a sacrifice fly to shallow centerfield, scoring Guzman.

Brandon Goff needed just 94 pitches for a seven inning complete game, totaling five strikeouts, one walk, allowing two earned on seven hits for his third win of the year.

Guzman again was 3-for-4, scoring twice, and driving in a pair. Mattison was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The final game of the series will be Saturday at 12 p.m. at Ted A. Broer Stadium.
