Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. – Fire softball took two from Mount Mercy University today, first 6-0 then 3-1.
Game two was the one to watch with a Fire comeback in the sixth. Down 1-0 after a Mustang run in the top of the fifth, the Fire scored three runs on four hits for the win.
Bri Girardin was hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot then stole second to get in scoring position for Branee Pietrzak. A double down the left field line by scored Girardin, then Pietrzak advanced to third on a
Cat Maldonado single and scored the go-ahead on a bobble by the left fielder.
Sydnie Malloy singled to right for the final run of the game.
The Fire had nine hits to the Mustangs' four. Malloy was 3-for-3 while the remaining six hits were scattered between six batters.
Maldonado earned her sixth win of the season from the circle striking out four of 27 batters and walking one.
Game one was a bit more lopsided in the Fire's favor and they got started early thanks to
Anna Martin. With two outs and runners on second and third in the bottom of the first, she singled to right field for two RBI's.
They tacked on three more in the second with RBI's by
Taylor Stoltz, Pietrzak and Maldonado.
Run six came in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI by
Annie Weaver.
Stoltz and Girardin were both 2-for-3 in game one with Fire hits totaling 10 to the Mustangs' three.
Lindsie Scholwinski pitched the shutout and struck out nine of 27 to move to 14-4 on the mound.
The Fire are back in action tomorrow at the National Training Center in Clermont. Their doubleheader is scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. against West Virginia Tech.
