Softball Falls Twice to Grand View

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. – Fire softball snapped a six game win streak this afternoon with back-to-back losses to Grand View University, a team that was receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll. The first game of the day ended 4-3 then the Fire fell to the Vikings again, 6-2.
 
Southeastern led game one 3-1 going into the top of the seventh, but a two out, three-run home run put the Vikings over the edge and the Fire weren't able to respond in the bottom.
 
The fire took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the second on a hit and two errors. Run one was due to an error, then Bri Girardin notched an RBI on a squeeze play.
 
The two teams traded runs in the third with the Fire's coming off the bat of Brandee Pietrzak. She sent the pitch over the left field fence for the insurance run before the Vikings ran away with it in the seventh.
 
Pietrzak was 2-for-3 in game one and the Fire had six hits as a whole.
 
Lindsie Scholwinski suffered her fourth loss of the season from the mound. In seven innings she allowed four earned runs on four hits, walked three and struck out five.
 
Game two was knotted at two after five full innings, but a two run double and a two run homer in the top of the sixth helped the Vikings to their second win of the day
 
The scored was knotted at one after one. The Vikings scored a single run on three hits and left two stranded in their half of the inning, then Natalie Hughes had an RBI single in the bottom to tie it.
 
Innings two and three were scoreless then a Grand View error in the fourth put the Fire up by one.
 
The Vikings answered with one in the sixth to puts twos on the board.
 
Hits were a bit lopsided in game two as the Fire recorded seven to the Vikings' 12. Anna Martin and Bri Girardin were both 2-for-3 in the loss.
 
Cat Maldonado moved to 5-3 from the circle pitching five and two thirds innings. She had one strikeout and allowed two earned runs on 12 hits.
 
Emily Bryant pitched the final inning and a third, striking out one.
 
The Fire have a few days to recuperate before they take on MidAmerica Nazarene University on Friday. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the SEU Softball Field.
