Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. – Fire softball moved to 18-6 this afternoon with their fifth and sixth wins of the week. Today, the victim was Northwestern College by the scores of 9-4 and 2-0.
Southeastern took an early 3-0 lead in game one on four hits.
Sydnie Malloy led off the bottom of the first with a single down the leftfield line, then
Taylor Stoltz bunted for a base hit to make it first and second with no outs for
Cat Maldonado.
Maldonado sent an RBI single to right field and advanced to second on the throw.
Anna Martin and
Natalie Hughes had the next two RBI's with a groundout followed by a single to center field.
A groundout and two K's by
Lindsie Scholwinski put the top of the second in the books, then the Fire scored four additional runs in the bottom.
Bri Girardin bunted for a base hit in the leadoff spot, then stole two bases to put a runner on third with no outs for Malloy. She reached first on a fielder's choice that checked Girardin at third, but Girardin crossed on an RBI groundout by Stoltz for the first run of the inning.
Maldonado was next who reached on an error that allowed Malloy to score then a Hughes double to deep left field crossed
Sammy Jacobson who pinch ran for Maldonado. Hughes crossed next on a
Brandee Pietrzak single for the final run of the inning.
Northwestern answered with two in the top of the third on three hits and an error.
The Fire scored their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball and an RBI single by Hughes. Northwestern earned two more in the top of the seventh before a pop out to short ended the game.
Southeastern racked up 10 hits in game one with two apiece belonging to Stoltz, Hughes, and Pietrzak while Maldonado and Hughes each had two RBI's.
With the win Scholwinski moved to 11-3 allowing no earned runs in six innings and striking out 11 of 24 hitters.
Emily Bryant pitched the final inning allowing one earned run and striking out one.
In game two, Southeastern scored a run in each of the first and second innings for the win. The winning RBI in the first belonged to Martin on an RBI single that scored Stoltz who singled in her plate appearance.
Run two was thanks to a squeeze bunt by Malloy. With one out and runners on first and third, she bunted to the pitcher's mound and was put out, but Weaver, who singled in the leadoff spot, scored on the play.
Martin was the only multiple hit contributor in game two with a 2-for-3 effort at the dish. The Fire had a combined seven hits to Northwestern's three.
Maldonado powered through all seven innings on the mound allowing just three hits and striking out four of 25 batters.
A day of recovery puts the Fire back on the diamond on Monday in a double header against Grand View University. Game one is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the SEU Softball Field.
