Fire Take Series Opener from #2 Bobcats

LAKELAND, FLA.-- In a dramatic Sun Conference matchup, Southeastern surprised #2 St. Thomas in a closely-contested 6-5 thriller.
Neither team scored or registered a hit until the third, when the Fire (17-12, 3-4 TSC) went up 2-0 in the bottom of the third.  Marcus Guzman drove in Josiel Colon with an RBI double, and later scored on an RBI single by Diego Perez.
Southeastern tacked on a couple more runs in the bottom of the fourth; Derek Martin sent a laser off the left-center field fence to score Hunter Bonner, then Martin scored off a Colon RBI double.
Jordan Gard (3-2) pitched five gritty innings.  Things were going smoothly until the top of the fifth, when the lefty issues walks to load the bases.  Gard then forced the 6-3 double play to escape the inning without allowing any more runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mike D'Acunti smashed his ninth home run of the season to put the Fire ahead 6-0.
It all started coming apart for Gard in the sixth.  A walk, a double, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases; Gard then gave up a grand slam to Cesar Ramirez to make the game 6-4 Fire.  Jonathan Martin was called upon in relief and gave up another run before getting out of the inning.
With the score stuck at 6-5, the Fire bullpen was asked to keep the #2 team in the nation scoreless for the next three innings.  Martin kept the Bobcats off the board until the top of the eighth, and then handed the ball over to Josh Egert, who got the last out of the inning.  The lefty was asked to finish the game off in the ninth to get the save.
The best defensive play of the night belonged to Sean Anderson.  With one out in the ninth, Jose Gomez lined a grounder down the third base line.  Anderson ranged to his right, dove for the ball, recovered, and threw a bullet to get Gomez.  Egert then induced a fly ball to end the game.
Southeastern will try to take the series from the second-ranked Bobcats tomorrow afternoon.  Games are set to start at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Broer Stadium.
