CLERMONT, Fla. – Southeastern softball secured its 10
th win of the season in a come-from-behind, 4-3 win over Lourdes University this afternoon at the National Training Center. The win was their second of the day as they took down Cleary University 4-0 in game one.
Lindsie Scholwinski earned the win against Lourdes coming in relief for
Emily Bryant who gave up three runs on seven hits in three and two thirds innings. Scholwinski locked down the defense allowing no runs on one hit and striking out four of the 11 hitters she faced.
The visiting Fire were down 3-2 heading into the seventh with the top of the order up. Lourdes' pitcher Kloee Cuckler walked
Bri Girardin then was replaced by the losing arm, Marissa Kostick.
Cheyenne Blaha walked next then both runners advanced on a wild pitch to make it second and third with no outs for
Cat Maldonado.
Maldonado placed a blooper single shallow down the left field line, just out of the fielder's reach for the tying RBI, then
Anna Martin sent a sacrifice fly to right for run four. In the same play, Maldonado was picked off at first for out two of the inning, then a fly out put the Fire defense back on the field.
Two pop outs and a strike out later, the Fire had the win.
Lourdes was up 3-0 on five hits and a Southeastern error after three full innings. The Fire scored one in each of the fourth and fifth to make it a one run game.
Heather Faulk had the first RBI with a triple to deep right field. The next inning, Maldonado doubled to center with one on for run two. She was 3-for-4 in game two with a double and two RBI's.
The Fire had six hits to Lourdes' eight.
Sydnie Malloy was 2-for-2 at the dish and Faulk was 1-for-2 with an RBI triple good for the first hit of her collegiate career.
The scoreboard showed zeros in game one against Cleary until the bottom of the fifth when the Fire scored three runs on two hits and three errors.
With one out, Alex Millett reached second on an error, advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on the catcher's wild throw for the first run of the game. A Faulk walk and Girardin base hit bunt followed before
Cheyenne Blaha sent a single to center for the final two runs of the inning.
Natalie Hughes singled for an RBI in the bottom of the sixth, then three Scholwinski K's sealed the deal.
Scholwinski tossed all seven innings and struck out an impressive 16 of 23 Cleary hitters, setting a new school record for strikeouts in a game. She gave up just two hits and two free passes in her sixth win of the season. The following win over Lourdes moved her to 7-1 in the circle.
Southeastern scattered eight hits between seven batters with a 2-for-3 effort belonging to
Annie Weaver.
The Fire will hit the road later in the week for their spring trip to the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Their first games are on Saturday against Blue Mountain College at 11 a.m. and LSU Alexandria at 3 p.m.
