Baseball Posts Shutout Wins in Doubleheader Sweep

LAKELAND, Fla.—The Fire baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season, shutting out Avila University 7-0 and 8-0 in a pair of seven inning contests Friday night.
 
Brandon Goff struck out seven batters in six innings of work in Game 1, allowing just three hits and a walk on 73 pitches. Ryder Albright worked a 1-2-3 seventh to close the game out.
 
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Luis Diaz scored on a throwing error. Mike D'Acunti recorded his first hit as a member of the Fire, a towering home run to centerfield to make it 2-0. Chris Mattison made it 3-0, when he scored on a wild pitch.
 
Southeastern added five runs in the sixth, loading the bases on a perfectly placed bunt by Derek Martin. Angel Garced drew a walk to score a run, and a wild pitch made it 5-0. Martin came around t oscore on a groundout by Sean Anderson, and Garced scored on an RBI single by Marcus Guzman.
 
In Game 2, Andres Cancio scattered six hits, walked two, and struck out five over five scoreless innings of work to earn his first win of the season.
 
D'Acunti got the Fire going on offense with an RBI single in the first to score leadoff man Josiel Colon. In the third inning, Marin singled deep down the right field line to score Trace Thornal, who was pinch running for D'Acunti following his one-out single to right.
 
The Fire broke the game open in the fifth with five runs on four hits, which included a leadoff double by Zach Hessinger. Hessinger scored on an RBI single up the middle by Mattison. Diaz doubled into the right field corner to score Mattison and Martin, making it 6-0. Christian Arroyo followed with a double of his own to score Diaz.
 
D'Acunti finished the day 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored. Mattison was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
