Fire Down #15 Davenport at NTC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Southeastern softball, the 16th ranked team in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll, took down #15 Davenport University 1-0 today in their second game at the National Training Center in Clermont.

The Fire drew the visitors straw against the Panthers and scored their lone run in the top of the fourth. With a runner on first and two outs, senior Anna Martin doubled to deep left field for the winning RBI.

Davenport had a chance to open up the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth, but the Fire defense stepped up to secure the lead. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, then Sydnie Malloy handled a hard hit ball to shortstop with ease for a 6-3 groundout that ended the inning.

The Fire defense came in clutch once again in the bottom of the seventh. The Panthers bunted with a runner on first and no outs but a 3-4 putout got the hitter at first then Taylor Stoltz fired to second to catch the runner returning to the bag. A single followed before Lindsie Scholwinski sent the last batter packing on three strikes.

Davenport outhit Southeastern 5-2 and Emily Maves, the losing arm, struck out 11 Fire hitters and walked one.

Scholwinski notched three K's for her fifth win of the season. She powered through all seven innings, walking one and allowing five hits.

A three run bottom six is what elevated the Fire to a 4-1 win over the Grace College Lancers in game one of the day.

Back-to-back doubles by Cat Maldonado and Martin put the Fire on top for good, but they weren't done yet. Martin caught the defense off guard and stole third before the next pitch was even thrown, then scored on a wild pitch.

Two groundouts followed to put Annie Weaver at the dish who singled to the pitcher's mound. Malloy singled next to put two on for Alexandra Millett who notched an RBI single to center for the final run of the game.

The teams traded RBI singles in the first inning to tie the ballgame with the Fire's belonging to Brandee Pietrzak.

Scholwinski notched the victory pitching the final two and a third innings. She struck out four of seven batters and only gave up one hit. Maldonado went four and two thirds to start the game allowing five hits and an earned run.

Malloy was 3-for-3 at the plate and the other seven Fire hits belonged to seven different batters.

The Fire will return to Clermont on Tuesday to take on Cleary University at 1 p.m. and Lourdes University at 3 p.m.
