Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. – Southeastern softball moved to 6-2 today with a sweep of the NCAA Division II Chestnut Hill College Griffins. Both games lasted five innings with the first ending 8-0 and the second 10-2.
The Fire split eight runs evenly between the first two innings of game one.
Cat Maldonado doubled with two on and no outs to put the first two on the board.
Taylor Stoltz and
Bri Girardin crossed on the hit, both having walked in their first at bats.
A two-run home run from
Anna Martin was next. She sent it over the center field fence on a 3-2 count for the final two runs of the inning.
Southeastern matched that effort in the bottom of the second with four runs on four hits. Alexandra Millet led off with a single and was pinch run for by
Heather Faulk. A base hit bunt by Stoltz followed, then
Natalie Hughes, who pinch it for
Bri Girardin, sent a single to center to score Faulk.
Maldonado was next. She launched a three-run bomb to left that nearly hit the football stadium for the final runs of the game. The junior was 2-for-3 in game one with an impressive five RBI's.
Lindsie Scholwinski secured her third win in the circle tossing all five innings. She struck out nine of 17 batters and allowed just three hits.
Chestnut Hill mixed it up and put a brand new starting nine on the diamond for game two, but the final score differential remained consistent.
Girardin scored the lone Fire run of the first inning on a stolen base. She advanced in a one out, first and third situation that baited a throw to second base.
The bottom of the second was home to the Fire's next five. With one out, Millett doubled to deep right-center field to score
Annie Weaver and
Quynn Reddick who both singled in their respective at bats.
Stoltz singled next to put two on, then a strikeout put Maldonado at the plate with two outs who doubled down the left field line for runs three and four of the inning. She reached third on a single by Martin, then scored on a passed ball before the inning concluded.
The final four runs were scored in the following inning on six Fire hits and a Chestnut Hill error. Malloy and Reddick singled to start the inning, then Stoltz got the first RBI scoring Malloy. Girardin took a hack at it next and tripled to deep center for two RBI's, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Maldonado before a line out to third ended the third.
The Griffins' two runs were unearned in the top of the fourth on no hits and four Fire errors.
Emily Bryant moved to 2-1 on the mound pitching three and two thirds innings. She gave up no earned runs on two hits and struck out two of 18 hitters. Maldonado pitched the final inning and a third striking out two.
The Fire outhit the Griffins a 12-2 in game two. Maldonado was 1-for-1 with a homerun and three RBI's while Weaver and Martin were both 2-for-3.
Southeastern is back in action tomorrow at the National Training Center in Clermont. They're scheduled to take on Grace College at 12:30 p.m. then Davenport University at 3 p.m.
