Box Score 2 PLANT CITY, Fla. – Southeastern softball moved to 4-2 on the season today with two wins at the springbreaksoftball.com NAIA Weekend in Plant City. They took game one from Cumberland University, 8-1, then downed Edward Waters 12-2 in six innings.
The Fire took an early 1-0 lead over Cumberland in the top of the first on an RBI double by
Cat Maldonado.
Bri Girardin scored on the hit after singling to left in the two spot.
Cumberland knotted it in the bottom of the second on an error, but the Fire took over for good in the top of the third with two runs on two hits.
It was Girardin again as she hit a bunt single to reach base then scored on a passed ball with no outs. Maldonado crossed next on a sacrifice fly to left by
Natalie Hughes before the inning ended.
The top of the fourth was home to the Fire's next three runs.
Quynn Reddick hit a single to third with one out, then
Taylor Stoltz followed with a base hit bunt. A passed ball made it second and third for
Alexandra Millett who pinch hit for Girardin. The freshmen sent a single to center for two RBI's and the final run of the inning was on an RBI groundout by
Anna Martin.
The Fire's last runs were in the fifth. Girardin hit an RBI single that simultaneously moved Stoltz to third, then Stoltz stole home when Girardin was rundown safely back to first.
Lindsie Scholwinski threw all seven innings and gave up no earned runs on six hits and struck out nine.
Maldonado was 3-for-3 at the dish with a double. Stoltz and Girardin were each 3-for-4 with three singles apiece and the Fire had 12 total hits in the game.
The Fire found themselves knotted at two with Edward Waters after four innings, but a five run top five was what put them up for good.
Sydnie Malloy doubled to deep right-center to leadoff then Reddick reached on an error. Malloy scored on a groundout by Stoltz then Reddick crossed on a sacrifice bunt by Girardin who reached first on a fielder's choice.
A Maldonado double to left scored Girardin then RBI singles by Martin and
Brandee Pietrzak scored the final runs of the inning for a 7-2 lead.
The Fire matched their efforts in the top of the sixth on three hits, five runs and an Edward Waters error.
Three runs had already crossed on an error, a walk and a sacrifice fly when Martin sealed the deal with a two out, two run bomb for the final runs.
The Fire had 12 hits in 28 at bats. Malloy was 3-for-3 with a double and Martin was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI's. Maldonado also had multiple hits with a 2-for-3 effort and two RBI's.
Maldonado earned the win in the circle pitching five of six and striking out five in 21 batters. She gave up just one earned run on five hits.
The Fire return to Lakeland to take the diamond again on Friday in a double header against Chestnut Hill College. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
