Box Score 2 PLANT CITY, Fla. – In its first day at the springbreaksoftball.com NAIA Weekend in Plant City, Fire softball lost their first game to Middle Georgia State University, 2-0, and then beat Martin Methodist College 5-2.
The Middle Georgia State Knights scored the lone runs of the game in the top of the first on three hits.
The Fire left one on in each of the third, fifth and sixth innings and two in the seventh, but were never able to cross a runner.
Their best chance came in the bottom of the seventh when singles by
Anna Martin and
Brandee Pietrzak followed by a walk loaded the bases with no outs. A 1-2-3 double play made it second and third with two down, then a ground out ended the game.
Emily Bryant suffered the loss and moved to 1-1 on the season. She gave up four hits and struck out four in 26 at bats.
The Fire's six singles were distributed between six hitters and they committed three errors in seven innings.
Game two began a bit different for the Fire as they put up three quick runs on two hits and a Red Hawks error in the top of the first.
Taylor Stoltz crossed first with one out on an error by the shortstop. She was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Martin stepped up to the plate next and slammed an RBI triple to right for run two of the inning, then Pietrzak singled to left to cross Martin.
The Fire tacked two more on in the fourth with RBI singles by
Natalie Hughes and
Cat Maldonado.
Two Red Hawks runs resulted from four hits and an error in the bottom of the 6
th, but their efforts fell short in their half of the seventh.
Lindsie Scholwinski secured her first win of the season from the circle pitching all seven innings and striking out nine. She gave up eight hits and no earned runs in 31 at bats.
Martin was 2-for-4 in game two with a triple and Pietrzak was in impressive 3-for-4. Freshman Alexandra Millet also contributed multiple hits with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
The Fire are back in action tomorrow in Plant City. Game one is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. against Cumberland University then game two is set for 3 p.m. against Edward Waters College.
